Franke was the team’s equipment manager for 42 years. He served as an emergency backup goaltender more than 30 times, including on Dec. 16, 2002, when he relieved an injured Pokey Reddick. The Komets beat the Elmira Jackals, 4-3, in a shootout, earning him the nickname “1-0 Joe.” He had eaten two hot dogs and drank a Mountain Dew during the first and second period
